Chemical warfare warfare warFARE!
I’m really psyched about this week’s show, The Commodification of Punk. It’s a subject near and dear to me, because this is the music I grew up with and it basically saved my ass in a time of serious isolation. It’s one thing to grow up hanging out at CBGB or Mabuhay or 924 Gilman… and quite another trying to find Dead Kennedys albums in rural Utah (pre-Napster/Amazon et al., even) ! It was well worth it, though, to be able to tune out the drones and crank up Richard Hung Himself or Stealing People’s Mail. We’re finally nailing down the guests, and they are going to be fantastic. Put a safety pin through your nose, deface a Wal-Mart sign and tune in!

Who Cares About The Children? What About ME!
This was actually written in the past for an assignment for school (I was in kindergarten at the time), but Chris my producer kept hounding me to put something up… It’s a lil deep… so if your not in the mood… scroll… lots…
Who Care’s About the Children What About Me
I start my day reading the newspaper, and lullaby myself to sleep at night by watching reruns of Law and Order. Media violence, and my exposure to it, is something I can count on as a part of my day. Consistency is good. If media violence and I were dating, I could never accuse him of standing me up. Although, I must admit as much as I love my media violence, he sure is doing some psychologically abusive tricks on my mind. He’s pervasive, that media violence guy, showing up everywhere…
Like every abused woman, my behavior has changed now that he is in my life. I still avoid the deep end of a pool, for fear a shark will attack me. For this paranoia I can thank the promo clips for the movie Jaws; I never actually saw the movie but I got the message. That is irrational though, because sharks live in the ocean, not a pool. True, but they also now live in the ocean I call my mind and somehow my mind only retained the ’sharks swim in water and kill people’ part. I hate birds too, and when I say hate, it’s because I am afraid of them. I can thank the Alfred Hitchcock movie The Birds for this fear. Once again, I never saw the movie yet somehow that image of the woman scrunching down against a wall shielding herself with only her arms from these horrible black birds which would just pick pick pick at her messy hair somehow permeated into my psyche… but I never saw the movie, just caught a glimpse of that lovely scene. Perhaps, like the obese people that are suing MacDonald’s, I should send my therapy bills to the various studio networks that produced these films.
I have never been attacked, but I carry pepper spray. I cross the street if I am alone and see a person walking towards me who looks scary (i.e. non-female). I myself have never been attacked, raped, robbed, or terrorized, but I have a profile of what I think a rapist, robber, terrorist, or serial killer might look like which I carry with me in the disaster preparedness section of my brain. I have never committed a heinous crime, but now think the best way to get rid of a body is to chop it up and put it in chili. Airplanes, post 9-11, will still freak me out when I see them flying low over the city. I question their proximity to the Golden Gate Bridge or downtown, and most importantly to me.
Does long-term exposure to media violence effect me? Yes, because I am afraid. Are you?

Still not listening after all these weeks
While Irene’s dealing with real life this week (as opposed to the Real World), we’re taking the opportunity to present a remix of our favorite guests and moments from our previous shows. Skye the Ladybug and I will also be sharing some hilarious behind-the-scenes glimpses into the chaos that is N1L on Friday mornings. And who knows who else might turn up, as always…
If you can tune in the show on Friday, or catch it streaming on the ‘net, it will be a good way to catch up on what we’ve been doing. We may post an abbreviated podcast with some of the highlights. Regardless, be sure to check out next week’s show, which is guaranteed to kick ass! We’ll be back in high gear with a show about punk and commercialization that is already shaping up to be one of our best.

no ones show this week
I will be unable to rock the mic this week… but we are working on some great shows such as “The Commodification of Punk” which will be two Fridays from now ie October 28th, 2005.
My pre-show take on the Punk scene is that it used to be about F-you and now it’s more about F-me.
Either way this will be an important show because the historic CBGB is being jacked on their lease. If you want to help save a piece of ourstory (like it’s not just his-story. I mean there’s already too little space in history for all of us) check out Save CBGB
Also, the vlogging reporter Amanda Congdon covered this story some time ago on one of her daily vlogs at Rocketboom … which are funny… and well edited… and searchable… and basically everything I would like to be like to be I’m a grown up vlogger… anyway those vlogging megastars did a great piece on CBGB already back on August 29th, 2005
I just learned tonight how to make my words light up so I can promote other sites and make the links work. I am like total getting over my technophobia… I bought memory for my computer so I can have space to edit things (although I have not learned how to do that yet)
I would have put up my last vlogs but in an unfortunate turn of events my cats peed on my camera and my tapes. I guess they were trying to communicate to me through pissing on one of the few things in my life I could potentially pawn if I ever developed a habit I couldn’t afford… such as feeding them on a regular basis… so I - like a good cat mom- wanted to sit them down and have a talk with them about pissing on things that are not theirs and in the calmest I-can’t -believe-you-peed-on-my-digital-camera-you-furry-ingrates voice I told them to sit. They did not. How rude. I calmly reminded them of “Ooboo” the black dog on TV that sits when the voice over guy says “sit Ooboo sit” Ooboo sits and then voiceover guys says “Good Dog” It was hopeless, so instead I got a head cleaner for the camera and it now records but it doesn’t playback… this could be a wedge in my plans to educate the world about media literacy one vlog at a time…

Ode to Lawrence Lessig -
We all love Lawrence Lessig. Unfortunately those young’ns today just don’t know who he is… and really though I am not making a judgment on the name Lawrence or Lessig for that matter… it would be terrific if we could say, rename the guy.
Perhaps it’s time Lawrence Lessig got a new name to give him a little more street cred.
Check out The Woz’s site.
or what about Jennifer Lopez aka J-Lo. Even Dubya has a catchy name; come to think of it, maybe that’s why he’s managed to stick around.
A nickname is an endearing way to show our love and support and more importantly if your nickname wins you will win bragging rights forever AND I talked to Lessig’s most lovely assistant and she said she could hook up a special dinner with you and the man himself. If he doesn’t agree however, I suppose I will have to go out instead. (Chris says I have to kiss the winner on the cheek.) Rest assured that we will scrounge up a suitable prize. And let’s not forget the bragging rights you will receive for successfully hippifying the Prof.

Leave your suggestions in the Comments section! We have picture submissions that are sooo funny and as soon as I can get a hold of someone savvy enough to post them I will… but in the meantime you can email me at irene@nooneslistening.org

This Week’s Show
We had yet another great show on Friday, and I can’t wait to get it up on LibSyn. Due to a technical issue with the studio, we won’t be able to finalize the show and get it online until Monday evening. Comes with the territory on a DIY show, I suppose! Trust me, it will be worth the wait.

What I learned from my interview with Lawrence Lessig, by Irene McGee
Lessig more.
Additionally, “overregulation stifles creativity” (This is one of numerous good Lessigisms from his book Free Culture). Although, in my case I think under-regulation stifles productivity…)
Here’s the skinny on his book in simple, easy-to-use vernacular which you can use at parties to impress those around you who try to turn the copyright issue into a steal versus purchase argument. This is not the argument, not only because no one would get into a fight over such a lame debate, because no one would be on the side of stealing… and if they were they would be on the wrong side of the law the side with no order.
No library has run any Barnes and Nobles out of town.
Just because we can watch Gwenny’s hubby sing acoustic on MTV, does not mean we’re any less inspired to purchase tickets to his upcoming show.
Seinfeld will be offered for free, in syndication, every night any night forever infinity amen - I swear on the part of the bible that both Jerry Seinfeld and I believe in… Does that mean that his DVD box set home edition might have seemed like a waste of money to anyone? No. People ran to Best Buy to purchase the complete DVD box set for just In Time for the holidays.
The only thing exposure will guarantee is that people WILL PURCHASE more. This is America. United We Charge.

Hewo!?! Nevermind, noone listens to me…
Did you listen to any of the shows yet? (Just lie to me here; it will do wonders for my ego.) If not, you should. Basically, NoOne’s Listening is a painless way to get your media ethics education without having to read. Now we at NoOne’sListening are a non-partisan radio show with no corporate backing (or fronting for that matter – seriously Colin, the new audio engineer, is flat as the mixing board he operates). We don’t support elephants or donkeys. However, we do offer peanuts and hay to all our guests, and if they happen to go for the peanuts over the hay we may point out the obvious like this guest has elephant in the room tendencies…. But I digest…
Part of the key to bridging the gap between academia and entertainia (It’s a made up word but if we can tinker with gadgets we should be able to tinker with words!) is getting people to talk and to talk they have to listen and I want to make the listening as painless and fun as possible. Controversy sparks conversation, but so does great gossip.
The other part of the key is in the brains of people like Elana Rosen and Lawrence Lessig … People who are getting media literacy programs started and using their media knowledge to make sure there is no ledge in the digital divide. This way we are like a Hands Across Enterainia Bridge (at this point I hope you are humming in your head: “We are the World, We are the children…” That’s a great bit for the show; we should re-work the lyrics… See? Funny, painless, yet thought-provoking.

We-B Live.
Woohoo, yet another medium for us to be ignored in! Welcome to any brave souls who have made it this far.
